Early evaluation of child's development

The Children's early Development Screening Tool Kit (BAASIK) is a tool that helps to identify children's development needs and risks in a timely manner and to provide appropriate support. BAASIK is:

The aim of BAASIK is to identify development risks in a timely manner and to provide clear, practical recommendations to parents and professionals. . This helps to timely identify both physical and cognitive developmental abnormalities and emotional and behavioural difficulties that can affect a child's ability to fully develop and successfully integrate into social and educational environments.

International data show that psychiatric disorders are widespread among children and young people and increase with age, with about 2% of children under 5 years of age and 13% of children and young people under 19 years of age in Europe facing psychiatric disorders, while they reach 19% in adolescents (European society for child and Adolescent psychiatry, 2024). These data highlight the importance of early screening, as early identification of risks in early childhood can prevent the consolidation of difficulties and mitigate the long-term impact on the child's development and quality of life in the future.

How does the evaluation take place?

  1. parents fill out the questionnaire

    Parents provide information about the child's development in everyday situations. 

  2. Teacher fills out the questionnaire 

    If a child attends a pre-school educational institution, a professional observation of the teacher is included. 

  3. A child takes Assessment of the child's abilities and skills (from 3 years of age) 

    Specialist assesses the child's abilities and skills using tasks appropriate for the child. 

  4. General practitioner get's involved

    Results are integrated into the prophylactic assessment of the child's health and development.


Timely development assessment allows to:

  • identify potential risks early
  • to provide targeted and effective support
  • reduce the risk of further difficulties
  • to promote the full development and well-being of the child

BAASIK IS not a diagnostic tool and does not place a long-term “seal” on the child. The aim of screening is to identify potential development risks in different areas of the in order to provide timely support if necessary. Early support greatly improves the child's development potential.

What happens after early screening?

If the screening results indicate potential developmental risks, an in-depth evaluation may be recommended. Within its framework, the team of specialists assesses the needs of the child in more detail and, if necessary, develops an individual support plan
